Transmission | Aug 2024 | Disability Standards Reform

In March, the Australian Government announced its decision to reform the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards).

To do this, the Australian Government convened five working groups to undertake further work on these reform areas, of which BIC is participating in four.

  1. Reporting: Develop a non-regulatory reporting framework.
  2. Rideshare: Undertake a holistic review of the point-to-point transport sector.
  3. Hearing augmentation: Investigate best-practice assistive listening systems suitable for deployment in public transport conveyances, infrastructure, and premises.
  4. Braille: Determine final technical specifications for the grade of braille to be used on printed documents and on signage.

Initial meetings commenced in August to determine the Terms of Reference, project plans and timelines. These meetings will continue every fortnight for the next 12 months.
