Moving People 2022 Conference November 13-16

2022 BIC National Conference Program Overview

The 2022 BIC National Conference – Moving People > Navigating Change, was held at the Sofitel Brisbane Central November 13 to 16. Over 415 delegates attended over the 2-1/2 day conference.
The plenary program included special addresses to delegates from a number of key politicians from the Federal Government and Opposition as well as the Queensland Government and local Brisbane Government.

The program ‘set the scene’ with 2 panels, including CEO’s of bus and coach operators on the Australian bus scene and federal and state/territory department heads and senior officials of transport who shared their thoughts on patronage, driver shortages, disability standards for accessible public transport and zero-emission transition and fleet procurement plans.

The program also included operational sessions that explored the relationship between service providers and passengers – identifying future travel demand and what passengers want, what it means to deliver excellent service and implementing safety assurance schemes for drivers, staff and passengers.

As Industry gets ready for the next decade and beyond for net-zero implementation, it is important not to lose sight of the looming changes to law and regulation that is likely to commence from as early as 2024. Transport law and regulation is undergoing significant review and will require, for many operators and suppliers across all business types, some form of forward planning to manage these changes. The conference included important updates on the progress of Heavy Vehicle National Law, Safe Systems Review (Australian road rules), Heavy Vehicle Road Reform and current status of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport.

The program included several keynote addresses including:

  • Future of transport in Brisbane – Councillor Ryan Murphy, Chair for Public and Active Transport – Brisbane City Council
  • The Hon Catherine King MP, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development & Local Government
  • Andrew Bata, Head of UITP North America Regional Office – UITP – International Association of Public Transport
  • Neil Scales, Director-General of the Department of Transport and Main Roads
  • The Hon. Mark Bailey MP, Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads
  • Senator the Hon. Carol Brown, Senator for Tasmania and Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport
  • Senator the Hon. Tim Ayres, Federal Assistant Minister for Trade and for Manufacturing
  • Senator The Hon. Bridget McKenzie, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development
